DESIREE LIM is a second generation Chinese born in Malaysia, and has found a home in both Tokyo and Vancouver.  A culturally diverse hybrid growing up in Malaysia and Japan, Desiree obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at Sophia University in Tokyo.

Desiree’s career in television started as Director and Associate Producer in news and documentary programs at the Japanese television network, TV Asahi in Tokyo.   She has worked in all aspects of documentary and news productions with national broadcasters like NHK, and production companies around the world.

As an independent filmmaker, Desiree’s films have opened to sold-out audiences at major lesbian & gay (LGBT) film festivals and screened at film festivals in North America, across Europe and Asia. Her Japanese debut TV feature Sugar Sweet premiered at the 39th Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival.

Lim’s latest award-winning film is a psychological thriller titled THE HOUSE filmed in Vancouver, starring some of the city’s top actors and premiered at the Newport Beach Film Festival.

In 2005, Desiree co-wrote and directed her first English TV drama Floored By Love that premiered at the New York Lesbian and Gay Film Festival in 2005, and was broadcast as part of CHUM TV’s (Canada) anthology series, 8 Stories About Love. Her films Sugar Sweet (2002) and Floored By Love (2005) are distributed by the oldest LGBT distributor in the world, Wolfe Video (USA). Floored By Love has been chosen by America’s largest LGBT magazine “The Advocate” as one of the Top 10 LGBT DVDs for the year 2005.

Desiree is an alumna of the Women In Director’s Chair Workshop (Canada, 2003) and National Screen Institute’s Features First Program (Canada, 2003).  She is also a recipient of numerous grants fromTelefilm Canada, National Film Board and British Columbia Film.

Fluent in English, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese and Malay, Desiree continues to transcend geographical and cultural borders to breathe life and give voice to the unique and original stories she has to tell.

“Engaging dyke seriocomedy Sugar Sweet reps Japan’s first fictive feature by and about lesbians… a promising calling card for Chinese-born, Malaysian-raised Nippon helmer Desiree Lim.” – Variety Magazine
